| IESB Exclusive: Master Chief and HALO May Be Coming to the Big Screen Sooner than Expected with a New Big Name Producer | ||||
|
HALO, the wildly popular video games that follow Master Chief, a cybernetically-enhanced human super-soldier, and his artificial intelligence (AI) companion, Cortana as they aide future humanity in battling the Covenant, a theocratic alliance of alien races, may be coming to the big screen much sooner than we expected.
IESB has learned exclusively (believe me this is solid and I've confirmed it three times over with studio executives and our close ties to CAA) that one of the biggest producers in Hollywood history is currently in active negotiations to develop the feature film adaptation and no it's not Jerry Bruckheimer or Peter Jackson. It's the man behind Jaws, E.T., Indiana Jones and Transformers, Mr. Steven Spielberg. Spielberg is blown away by writer Stuart Beattie's take on the game in his script entitled HALO THE FALL OF REACH. This coupled with the fact that his Dreamworks umbrella is looking for a big tent pole to help launch their newly independant studio with distribution over at Walt Disney Pictures after losing Transformers to Paramount in the separation, it's the perfect combination. Also, Spielberg is a huge gaming fan. His prodigal star Shia LaBeouf has been quoted talking about Spielberg being stuck on the 15th level of BioShock recently, "I get there and stick my head in to ask if he's ready-and this is classic Spielberg-he says, ‘Nope, Shia. I'm trapped!' " LaBeouf then starts playing both parts-concerned protégé and faraway mentor: "You're trapped? Steven, what are you talking about?" "I'm trapped back here. Follow my voice." "Where are you?" "Over here... Here... Here!" LaBeouf kept following the calls until he got to the director's office. And there was the master himself: shoes off, socks on, dressed in shooting gear, but sitting behind a computer, stuck on the fifteenth level of a first-person shooter called BioShock. "This is like months to get to this level, and he can't get past this one little mysterious spider god, and he's losing his mind. He's like, ‘I can't do it, Shia! I can't do it.' " Word is CAA, who rep both Spielberg and Beattie, is pushing these negotiations heavily. HALO belongs to Microsoft and they own all rights to a feature film and happen to have a great relationship with the producer who even unveiled their lastest gaming technology Project Natal at the E3 Expo earlier this year. It doesn't hurt to have Bill Gates as a good friend so I hear. Stuart Beattie, the writer behind the new concept that Spielberg loves, was quite busy during the 2007 writer's strike when he wrote the script on spec based on the storyline from Eric Nylund's prequel novel to HALO, THE FALL OF REACH. Beattie is also hot off the summer hit G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA which he co-wrote with director Stephen Sommers and others. During the promotional tour for that film, he told Scifi.com that the HALO story is, "an amazing story about this child that no one cares about and who cares for no one else, who kind of ends up saving all of humanity." Back on April Fools Day of 2008, Latino Review broke the news of the new Beattie script and had a write up on what it was all about, The script is, first and foremost, a character-driven story about a soldier named John who was kidnapped or "conscripted" by the UNSC when he was just six years old, and then brutally trained to become an elite Spartan warrior known as Master Chief 117. The site also posted 5 pieces of concept art that Beattie came up with to illustrate his vision for the franchise. Recently, sites have been reporting that the HALO project is completely dead after it halted under the guidance of Peter Jackson and director Neil Blomkamp with 20th Century Fox distributing. But with Spielberg now in active negotiations, this shit is about to get real! With Spielberg possibly in the producer's chair (if God willing these negotiations work out), who would be his first choice to direct HALO? Sound off in our comments section below! Stay tuned to the IESB for future HALO news!

I'd certainly like to see a GOOD 'Halo' movie made. But I sure wish that Peter Jackson's original choice of director could still end up making this thing!
After Neil Blomkamp's sterling work on his 'District 9', I hope he still gets a crack at it.

With Spielburg as the producer we can all agree that this film will be a great success, and knowing that Petter Jackson is a fan and may have some interaction with the films can only reasure all the fans.

Walt Disney Pictures? Dreamworks? NO NO NO!
HALO is a Mature rated videogame. As a movie it must have at least an R rating for graphic violence gore and language. If they do this movie in this particular way they will mess it up. However. it is not only microsoft who holds the reigns to Halo. Bungie is very very protective of their franchise and if they don't have complete control over characters and details they wont ever let it happen. So at least thats a relief. Ask Blomkamp to do it. He is A fantastic filmmaker . I Refuse to see Halo made into a childrens movie

Just have to say, I found it funny that you describe Spielberg as being responsible for the god-forsaken drek that is "Transformers" as opposed to, say, Close Encounters, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Munich or Minority Report. Typical clueless Sanchez. And unfortunately, Spielberg lost his mind years ago...maybe "Uncle" George will come on-board too, right Robert?

This will blow now, the clips blomp did with Peter Jackson were AWESOME and a movie even at just a similar calibre would have been awesome.
But well no offence to Spielberg but ALL of his recent movies have sucked so bad and well I know if he takes the helm of Halo it will be nothing compared to what it would have been

This is how I see it:
Director - Neil Blomkamp Executive Prodcuers - Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson Writer - Stuart Beattie Special Effects - WETA Digital This would be great! Spielberg and Jackson are friends and working on "The Adventures of Tintin", so maybe Jackson and WETA could still be involved. And for those complaining about a possible, Disney connection to the film...all I have to say is watch the "Tron: Legacy" teaser and tell me Disney couldn't be involved in a mature, big-budget sci-fi film, like "Halo". No Shia though in the film. Pleasse! Not in a "Halo" movie.

I was sad when I heard that the Halo movie was pretty much canned.
I am happy that there might be a new hope for the Halo movie. I just hope that it stays true to the Halo storyline that many of us have come to know and love. lol I don't want to see a "mellowed" out film so that a younger audience can appreciate it. It needs to have action and be able to just blow you away when you watch it. Halo is like the greatest thing known to man and I'll be damned if this movie sucks or there turns out to be things not right in the film because it's not true to the original storyline.lol

directors should be one of these: john woo (the master of cool & slick action movies), prachya pinkaew (who has a kickarse fresh take on camera angles with an awesome ability to capture the action that leaves the viewers glued to the screen), doug liman (who should've been the 1 & only man to direct the entire bourne series), the scott brothers- who're gods among gods of movie making, timur bekmambetov- who has the uncanny ability to project more action by using clever editing, christopher nolan- the guy who really knows how to make ppl care about the characters in his films no matter what genre it may be. AND if none of ye are still satisfied put robert rodriguez, brad baird-since hes a bad arse disney guy already, zack snyder, frank miller, jon favraeu- to liven up the dialogue as always & make halo not only kick arse with the action sequences, the visuals but also the dialogues, and just for kicks james cameron- the god of all gods of action movies. I guarantee that if cameron directs halo it's sales would equal or surpass halo's record video game sales too. The halo effect & a perfect circle of ruling the vid games market & movie market thus ruling all forms of visual entertainment market including comic book art...maybe. hah

i don't think this is good news at all. Peter Jackson would do a waaay better job sticking to the source material than Spielberg. Jackson would make a movie telling the story where Spielberg would just slap together a summer "blockbuster" to make as much money as they can. Jackson also knows how to be subtle with the special effects so that they help tell the story of the movie instead of trying to be what the movie's all about. just look at lord of the rings vs indiana jones 4 or transformers

Hey! I'm no film expert but here's a good idea, how bout making three movies like this: "Halo" based on the first game, "Halo 2" based on the second, and "Halo 3" based on the third. Screw the prequel. Make it a few years after the trilogy based on the games, when people actually care enough about the franchise on film to go see it. Or it's easy enough to explain all that in a prologue.
And why in the hell would you even skip over an entire installment. You're making it more difficult because now you have to find some bullshit way to alter the story to make it all fit. What a terrible direction to take the story. Stuart Beattie is a great writer and Spielberg is a great director. I would expect better than this. There are going to be a lot of disappointed fans leaving the theater goin, "Man that was good but I can't believe they did do this or didn't do that!". Did you catch that? "Good" not "Great". I don't understand what's so difficult, the games are cinematic enough, the work is almost half done.

Personally, I couldn't be happier that Blomkamp is off the project. He seems like a talented guy, but his style is all wrong for Halo. And interviews I read made it clear that he was never very interested in Halo itself - he just really wanted to make a futuristic Black Hawk Down, and he figured Halo was a good opportunity to do it. Which it ISN'T, so keep your mitts off it Neil!
I know Bryan Singer is kindof in the doghouse right now (and deservedly so) but he's a first-rate talent who could make a richer and more polished Halo than any work-a-day guy (Steven Sommers), and he might be happy to get a straight-forward blockbuster that'll put him back on moviegoer's good side.

Just felt like specifying something. Spielberg didn't direct Transformers. DIDN'T DIRECT IT. So if that's your problem with him, you should probably aim your hatred at Michael Bay first. He only produced it because he is cinematically fostering Shia Labeouf, he produces EVERYTHING he's in. Spielberg's name as producer is for reputation points only, he only gets to say "no" during production, not "yes." So creative talents will still reside with the director that gets chosen. And for those named already: Blomkamp already said no and alot of the others are seriously wishful thinking.

Blomkamp as he sad could not work on a Halo film right now. After all the poject that he was in collappsed after 5 month, and it came like a storm: no warnings were given. So maybe he isn't trusting to get working again on it. I hope that this film will be great, and maybe that there will be a trilogy of it.

Hopefully if only die-hard halo fans, (like myself) want to see the prequel, and it doesn't sell well, that they don't cancel any movies based on the actual games. I mean, action film lovers would flock to see something based on the games, but stuff like when John(Master Chief) grows up, thats just adding to the story. Boring for action lovers.

I'm sorry, but Spielberg is past his prime. He's gotten lazy as a Producer. Look at his recent movies and tell me that they can even compare to his early works. Honestly the guy has made some great movies, but for years now he's just been riding off his past success. At this point in his career I don't think I'd trust Spielberg with the Halo franchise.
I'd much rather see the work go back to Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp and WETA studios. Let them finish the work they began and follow Beattie's script. The Fall of Reach is the PERFECT story to introduce the mass public to Halo and is a far superior story to even the games.

Any real Halo fan has read the books and for anyone who has read the books they know Eric Nylund's books are the best and the prequel is my personal favorite it tells you just how bad ass the Spartans really are cause compared to the books the game master chief is slow and weak. for those of you that have not read the books this movie should show u just how cold the spartans are.i just love the fact that if a normal human were to get into there suits they would be reduced to a pill of blood. P.S. the suits from GI joe totally take after the spartans armor from the books.

Once I read the quote from the LatinoReview.com's article about Stuart Beattie's Halp Script.
"The script is, first and foremost, a character-driven story about a soldier named John who was kidnapped or "conscripted" by the UNSC when he was just six years old, and then brutally trained to become an elite Spartan warrior known as Master Chief 117." and "He told Scifi.com that the HALO story is, 'an amazing story about this child that no one cares about and who cares for no one else, who kind of ends up saving all of humanity.' " I personally felt a dread. He is really going to kill the character! I admit that I rarely played the games, I was more of a watcher of video games, but I did research about John-117 and know that to exploit the character will reduce his status as a icon. Do we need to know too much about him? True there is a somewhat detailed backstory, but to put it as the opening act of the movie is too exposing. He is human, more or less, but do the game designers and him let that get in the way of what's happening between UNSC and the Covenant. In fact I hear two cheif complaints about video game adaptations: 1. Watching the action will only make you wish you were playing the game 2. They change or add things John-117 is a video game icon who ultimately represents "the strength of a soldier". That's why everyone loved the JOKER in THE DARK KNIGHT. He was the ultimate representative of CHAOS who has nothing to lose, nothing they could threaten him with, no story of his origin to present the fact that he's "only human". Christopher Nolan may have done the origin story of Batman in BATMAN BEGINS, but Batman originated as human to be the most character-driven comic-book hero there is. It doesn't enrich a character to go backwards from an already established icon to your typical "kid who's given a big destiny in his life". When they likely do the Halo movie, don't degrade John-117 from his current status in video gaming world. If they want character-driven story with emotional substance, I think the perfect way is doing like they did in TERMINATOR 2: Judgment Day. The secondary leading characters, Sarah and John Connor, were the primary motivators of the plot as well the human fighters who feel fear and pain while Arnold Schwarzenegger is the Ultimate Fighting Machine who drives the plot by protecting Humanity's Savior and his mother, who does learn what it is to be human but not let that get in the way of the mission at hand. I hope you get an idea of how that could translate from the Perfect Action Film to the Perfect HALO film. We'll that's all I got to say.

Transformers huge movie 2 years in a row rocking the box office because transformers is a huge cartoon franchise and he made the film successful.
Michal bay did an amazing job on transformers and pearl harbor both emotional and action packed. the beginning of the halo film would probably show the spartans training in groups and not point out who the cheif is and then show the huge massacure of reach. But you guy should'nt worry alot about the director its the cast you need to fit, like dragonball movie the cast is a flop and the story was i doubt the 2 biggest names in hollywood at the moment would let the same happen to halo and if peter jackson joined with the other 2 we have a movie for the ages

DAMNIT!!! MASTER CHIEF, PLEASE SAVE US FROM SPIELBERG'O' AND STUART BEATTIE!!!
Someone wrote earlier, "This better be good or people are going to riot!" This isn't a joke! I will go nuts if HALO gets messed up! I don't care how many video games Spielberg plays, he's not the guy to produce or direct this movie! To get this movie right and spot on you have to be a true fan, and you can't miss a beat. Spielberg is to much of a PG13 kind of guy. This movie requires an R rating for sure. It's not about violence (although that would be the theme) it's about detail. You have to be able to show that this movie is realistic, and true to what the game is. When an alien or soldier gets killed, blood needs to be present. Go see district 9 to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Although it was a fictional movie, the elements were there of what would happen in its story line. Halo is not GI joe, transformers, or Wolverine origins. Fans of HALO demand more then what these movies offered. I've read on so many sites about critics, and people alike who stated about Transformers, "You have to shutoff your mind and just enjoy the action for what it is and forget the story." GIVE ME A BREAK! In this day and age you shouldn't have to "shut off" your mind. Why can't a movie have lots of action and a great story line to follow? Transformers was a botch job. GI Joe is ok, but again, weak story. Again, going back to District9...what a master piece! How about Star Trek, another great film and a story that makes sense. I guarantee if Spielberg gets a hold of this movie, it'll get turned into an kids afternoon special. It'll have a PG13 rating, and the way the story is portrayed will suck. You want this move to be good, then call James Cameron, or Ridley Scott. The escense of HALO was stolen from ALIENS in which Ridley Scott directed. These two guys are awsome when it comes to writing and directing. They place close attention to detail, and don't miss a beat. Anyways...I'm starting to get cranky just thinking about the fiasko that's up ahead if Spielberg gets this. Let him stick to Disney specials and such and leave the action thrillers to the pros...PLEASE AND THANKS!

For those of you who aren't true fans of the series, you should realize that the source material is actually quite exellent. The books for Halo( not to mention whatever Bungie is still holding out on within their halo bible of secrets, hopefully someone get access to this during preproduction and uses it wisely) provide more than enough to take this film in several directions because of the timeline that occurs during The book Halo: fall of Reach. Several things can happen, I believe parts of Halo: Contact Harvest (Contact was made in 2525 with the covenant) have to be place in the storyline to understand what happens and how the this uber alien force comes into being for non-fans who will undoubtly go and see this movie because it looks "cool," or they played the game. Not to mention the blasting it will get from film critics because they didn't look into the universe's "history" before hand. If they do blast the movie anyways and are fans of the series hopefully I won't be as disappointed too.
I think we gonna find alot of jumping around, small flashbacks as we see blue team and red team gear up on the pillar of Autumn before dropping in an attempt to save Reach. In the Book Reach falls pretty quickly, within a couple of hours of contact the pillar of Autumn is jumping towards the first Halo unknowningly. Survivors including other spartans are picked up after the first halo is destroyed(Halo: First Strike), within Halo: the Ghosts of Onyx, blue team with the exception of Master Chief, who is on Delta Halo, are fighting on earth before they are sent to get Dr.Halsey on Onyx(maybe there will be a tie in in ODST when it comes out).Plus you have to remember that there are other spartans and other worlds that the units fight on prior to the physical fall of reach. Honestly before you get to the intro of the first game you could come up with at least another movie, and several afterwards with ideas that are fresh and haven't been read or seen except for small excerpts, Jericho VII campaign, Grey teams exploits on the drifter colonies with Keyes, etc. The storyline is already character based and your important interactions are already written for the most part. The biggest disappointement that I see with the film is people having to put a face with the characters, you've seen/heard Sgt Johnson, cmdr Keyes, and Cortana to an extent within the game. The voice within the game says it all for Master Chief. but I guess there is some leway for a young John, After all he is 41 when Reach falls, all the spartans that have survived to this point are around his age(john 117 was found by Lt. keyes[at the time] and Dr Halsey in 2517 at age 6, Reach falls in 2552). Spielburg or no Spielburg, I think he might run into the same roadblocks. Director wise it has to be someone who has an intimate knowledge of the back stories and a studio that is going to allow it to come to life properly monotarily wise. I don't think fans of game world wide are going to settle for half measures. Halo Fall of Reach was a NY Times Best seller, that says alot right there about its cult following. Anyways I'm not a movie producer or director, just my opinion, if they can stick to the source material and timeline within Halo it might work, The the hardest decisions are gonna be how much time to allocate to these back stories, there are more than enough characters that exsist for a movie or two or three to work. Action sequences shouldn't be a problem to write in, that is the least of our concerns. I don't think anyone who really follows the halo universe wants a mindless action flick, so the characters have to be the driving force and that is what is holding this movie up, finding the balance. It's alot of information that has to be filtered through and squeezed into a relative small amount of time to do it any justice. Sequels out the wazoo? Mircosoft and the studios won't mind if it turns a profit.

Ugh, there's already inconsistencies! Some of the other SPARTAN-IIs survived the Fall of Reach... Also, he was known within the SPARTAN program as John-117, then later as SPARTAN 117, then finally by his rank, Master Chief. Also, Reach was not a "forward base", it was the most heavily fortified human world. THE military stronghold of the UNSC. Also, it's not "like the prequel", it's an adaptation of the novels that ARE prequels to the games.
Honestly, if they're going to do this movie, they should involve Bungie to make sure they don't fuck up the accuracy with the universe like Hollywood does with almost every movie adaptation of anything.

FOR THOES NEIL LOVERS distric 9 made less sence then transformers First and foremost why in the world would getting splashed in the face with there fuel source cause him to mutate into one of them. Even if i mutated him y would the mutation take their form. yes yes i know its alien but it is unfair to just try an explain everything a away with that simple fact. its like answering every question with by saying god did it. lets just chalk it up to bad writing. It Really did not make any since that the alien was looking for cans of their fuel on earth that means they had to have brought it with them when they left the ship and just discarded it y would they do this!!! Cause i think it would have been a lot easier to just look for it while they were on the ship. Second off there were many things in the movie that was not explained why could the understand each other so well but neither side could speak a single word of the others language. Third Why is there a super high tech ship with aliens that are dumber as dumb as a pack of wild dog and acted as such. even if they were just workers and they had a superior race then why would they give them a ship and deadly guns. Forth how did they become stranded when the only thing keeping the ship from leaving was the fact on one was on it. i mean why would he detach that control room from the bigger ship stranding them there. I just think this story line was just haphazardly thrown together for a quick buck after they canceled HALO and based on this movie im am elated Peter Jackson and the other guy did not make HALO they would have messed it up beyond belief Because when it does come out it will be about the prequel book by Eric Nylund like it alway should have been

With Spielberg at the helm halo could prove to be the first video game to succesfully cross into a legit film epic. However, halo cannot be a pure action movie like transformers, it must maintain its grand epic plotline that hooked so many gamers to begin with. the visual presentation and character connections must be fully developed, since the game's cutscenes (especially halo 3) deal mostly with character interaction.
As for the characters master chief as an adult should never have a face, and along with cortana, keep the voice actors from the game. However in my personal opinion: Captian Keyes: Ed Harris

Halo is an epic and to film it like a documentary/hand cam film would squander its grandoise and epic vision

I may not agree 100% with Neil Bloomkampt being the guy to helm HALO, but I'll definiately take him over Steven Spielberg. I read an early adaptation on some of Neil's ideas for Master Chief and I was less then impressed. I like what he did for D9, and I think it will become an all time favorite for sure, but I just don't like the idea of someone messing up the HALO story line. It needs to be as close to the books as possible. I also don't like the idea of Jerry Bruckheimer touching this film. This isn't Transformers, where the scenery and back drop is all colorful, with explosions happening every two seconds. Transformers, although visually stunning was a piece of crrap! It's not entire Jerry's fault, as the writer's were horrendous, but I still don't want him touching HALO.
I said it bofore and I'll say it again, the most logical choice would be Riddly Scott or James Cameron. HALO the game is a total ripoff of Riddly's movie Aliens. If you don't believe me go rent it and pay attention the the drop ship as it is identical to the Pelican, so is the automatick rifle that they had in Aliens. As is the HALO ship Pillar of Autum, in Aliens it is in the opening scene and is also identical. The game is somewhat of a ripoff, mind you I'm not complaining! So if your going to have someone who has intimiate knowledge of Aliens, props, and backgrounds combined with one of the best skill levels for directing a flawless movie then I'd go for Riddly Scott. James Cameron is also a great directer and he also pays very, very, very close attention to detail and that's what HALO purist want. For everyone else under the age of 20 who keeps crying and wanting Steven Spielberg to direct the film, and along with that no talent bum Stuart Beattie, your better off to rent a disney flick or just stick to playing the video game. Leave the movie to the true fans who have been waiting a long time and deserve more then what either of these guys can offer....

I am sick of these stories about the Halo Movie, I shall believe it's in production and going to see the light of day "WHEN IT IS IN THE DAMN CINEMA"
Seriously look at all the pathetic fanboys who buy into this shit discuss all the imaginary news, and theorize on the storyline when they know jack shit then get upset and cry when it's cancelled time and again. Seriously get a freaking life, if they make a movie you'll hear about it on somewhere like Entertainment TOnight, and the real proof will be when your ass s in a theatre seat with your popcorn with thye movie in front of you, THAT IS IF HALO ISN'T PAST IT'S USE BY DATE BY THEN. cos something bigger and shinier could come along, or people might just get sick of this shit. I mean I already have the halo Movie, It's a Trilogy but I have to use my XboX to watch it.... Understand??? IF ya got the Haqlo games then you already own the movie and know the story, if they make a cinematic movie you just know it'll end up shit like DooM was and will loeave alot of shit out and the rweal fans will be whinging like bitches. Rarely do game/comic conversions go well. Stick with the games buy the books, and you will have your Pretend Friend Master Chief in all his glory. FFS Get a life or a GF or both or something.

I've been following the halo triquel and it's been a great advance in video games. Speilberg should really only take this if he truly works on it. If this bombs or even get a 4/5 star rating, he is seriously not going to have much hope from any other halo fans.
Anyways...Seems like I can try to rest until the final words of Halo being released. Except...The script is called "the fall of reach?" We havn't even gotten through Halo: ODST! Not alone near Halo Reach. If this is going to pull Halo Reach it will confuse everyone and not follow through the basic I II and III pattern that it could go through instead. But, it seems it will have a I then II then III. By then we could be old enough to just say "Halo seems like a silly movie...Let's go see that one about the guy sitting on a rocking chair. It has all the action I need." It would be fun watching the elites turn on the covenant and kill the brutes from sneak attacks. NINJA!!! p.s. there really isn't a "one little mysterious spider god" in Bioshock. JSISYDEFWSAYAQTHTDWTS (just some info so you don't epic fail when someone asks you a question that has to do with this subject)

I believe speilberg will make one hell of a great movie, he is so successful and has a great eye for getting the deals right however after recent news and trailers there is one man and one man only tht should be directing this movie, that man would be the world famous james cameron, avatar will be the movie of the year, after all it already has elements of halo with the ships looking just like unsc hornets, he made the best alien movie there would be the perfect choice to direct such a big movie as halo

Peter Jackson as director would be so perfect. I mean what a legendary combination that would be. I think I would cry. Steven Spielbergs a genius, and Peter Jackson made Lord of the Rings, probably the greatest movie series ever created. A Halo trilogy or whatever it would become, would be so fucking huge. You have game fans, friends and family of fans, and then just the millions of people who watch the trailer and say this looks fucking awesome.
