10:15-11:15 Spotlight on Ralph Bakshi On par with such auteurs as Walt Disney, Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, and art spiegelman, Comic-Con special guest Ralph Bakshi redefined animation and became a hero to countless generations of fans and filmmakers. His name is synonymous with the great tradition of American cartooning. Bakshi is responsible for such memorable films and television shows such as Fritz the Cat (the first X-rated animated feature film), The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse, Spider-Man, Heavy Traffic, Wizards, Cool World, and The Lord of the Rings, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday the PowerPoint presentations of the poster presenters will be available to read in printed poster books and then the scholars will be present at the poster session to discuss their presentations in small-group and one-on-one discussions.

Dave Chow (College for Creative Studies) argues for the importance of a post-secondary education for the visual artist. Anne Hoyer (University of Heidelberg) traces the linguistic and thematic changes of the popular Scottish comic strip Oor Wullie.  Anita McDaniel (University of North Carolina-Wilmington) traces the effect of female creators on the superhero genre, both on the page and behind the pen.  Clayton Moore (Apple Valley Unified School District) responds to the death of Captain America and the New Gods from a creators rights perspective. Jarod Shurtleff (Henderson State University) examines the thematic loss of humanity among zombie fighters in Robert Kirkhams series The Walking Dead.

Geek Chic poster panel: Kom Kunyosying (University of Oregon) analyzes the role of the geek as melodramatic hero in Charles Burns Black Hole, R. Crumb's My Troubles with Women, and Chris Wares Jimmy Corrigan; and Carter Soles (University of Oregon) argues that Kevin Smiths dueling personas of unapologetic comic book fan and aspiring cinematic artist have always worked together harmoniously to advance his career in both mediums.

Comics and Psychology poster panel: A group of students from Henderson State University explore the psychology of comic book characters, including the Martian Manhunter, Batman, the Winter Soldier, Jamie Madrox, Warren Ellis protagonists, and others; Erica Ash, Tommy Cash, Carly L. Cate, Mark Head, Nick Langley, Robert O'Nale, Justin Poole, Thomas Sepe, and Nicholas Ward present.

2:30-4:00 Painting Dynamic Portraits: Demonstration from Life Nationally renowned portrait painter and fine artist Jeff Watts demonstrates oil portrait painting from a live portrait model. 5:30-6:30 Spotlight on Adrian Tomine New Yorker illustrator and Optic Nerve cartoonist Adrian Tomine is the author of one of 2007's most critically lauded graphic novels, Shortcomings. For this Spotlight, Tomine will be interviewed by the first editor ever to give him an actual paying gig, Marc Weidenbaum, editor-in-chief of magazines at VIZ Media. The two will discuss what it was about the then UC Berkeley student's comic that attracted Weidenbaum to offer him a regular spot in Tower Records' Pulse magazine and how Tomine has matured over the last decade to become one of North America's leading literary cartoonists. See the exclusive first look at footage and meet the stars of Underworld : Rise of the Lycans. The third film in the popular Underworld franchise delves into the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires, known as Death Dealers, and the barbaric Lycans (werewolves). A young Lycan, Lucian (Michael Sheen), emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor (Bill Nighy), the cruel vampire king who has persecuted them for hundreds of years. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, the beautiful vampire Sonja (Rhona Mitra), in his battle to free the Lycans from their brutal enslavement. On stage to take your questions will be Rhona Mitra, Bill Nighy, Michael Sheen and director Patrick Tatopoulos. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is in theaters everywhere January 23, 2009.

Quarantine: Television reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman (Steve Harris) are assigned to spend the night shift with a Los Angeles fire station. After a routine 911 call takes them to a small apartment building, they find police officers already on the scene in response to blood-curdling screams and soon learn that a woman living there has been infected by something unknown. After a few of the residents are viciously attacked, they try to escape only to find that the CDC has quarantined the building. Phones, Internet, television and cell phone access have been cut off, and officials are not relaying information to those locked inside. When the quarantine is finally lifted, the only evidence of what took place is the news crew's videotape. Quarantine opens in theaters everywhere October 17.

Pineapple Express: Frankly, if we tell you almost anything about the plot to this action/comedy, we probably wouldn't even be allowed to be here, so let's just say that producer Judd Apatow will be on stage with the gang in towdirector David Gordon Green, Seth Rogen (star and co-writer), James Franco, DannyMcBride, Amber Heard, and Evan Goldberg (co-writer)to show you how they've taken this particular genre to new highs. Also, be sure to ask Seth and Evan about their upcoming Green Hornet film.
