And Much More Version: BluRay Review: Way back in early 2005 I got an invite from Dreamworks to take an early look at Madagascar, hadn't really heard much about it at the time but it seemed worth a trip to S.F to check it out.
When we got there we were greeted by the directors, animators, and other parts of the creative team. They did the normal chit chat about their love of the project, etc, etc but what was interesting was that the film was originally envisioned to star those violent and funny penguins in a animated version of The Beatles A Hard Days Night…but naturally they couldn’t get the music clearances to make it happen (add that to your list of reasons Michael Jackson sucks).
As bummed as I was that I would rather be watching The Penguins Hard Days Night I found myself laughing through the unfinished film in front of me and found myself wanting more (kudos to them). Months later I got a look at the finished product and was amazed about how much was left out of the presentation. It’s a movie we’ve seen here in the House of M many times over (along with the Penguins Christmas DVD) and we are looking forward to seeing part two.
While the benchmark of CGI films is all about Pixar you have to admit Dreamworks has solidified their place as runner up in this field. With hits like Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Surfs Up, and Shrek they’ve really come up to show that while Pixar might be the team to beat it doesn’t mean they are without competition.
