A Figurine of Crow T. Robot Review: Celebrating 20 years after MST3K's premiere on television, the entire creative team reunites for the first time when Shout! Factory proudly presents its MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: 20th Anniversary Edition DVD box set on October 28, 2008. A sumptuous ode to this cult-classic series, the 20th Anniversary Edition DVD box set features four of the show's most requested unreleased film episodes - First Spaceship on Venus, Laserblast, Werewolf and Future War, and boasts exclusive DVD bonus content that explore the genesis, life and afterlife of MST3K.
FIRST SPACESHIP ON VENUS:
Synopsis -In the 1960 sci-fi thriller First Spaceship On Venus, a mysterious magnetic spool found during a construction project is discovered to have originated from Venus. A rocket expedition to the mysterious cloudy planet is launched to discover the origin of the spool and the alien race that created it.
Review - The oldest film of the bunch in this collection and easily the dullest as well.
Joel and the gang do their best to drag this movie in the realm of enjoyable but it’s not just a bad movie it’s boring and it leaves so little fodder for really great jokes. What they do manage to come up with is funny but you can tell they even struggled a bit with this lame duck. However they did manage to get “Today’s the day the teddy bears fly to venus” stuck in my head for days.
LASERBLAST:
Synopsis - In 1978's Laserblast, young actor Kim Milford plays an ostracized teenager who stumbles upon the remains of murdered mutated alien in the California desert. Along with the alien's remains, a high-tech laser gun and power source are accidentally left behind by the extraterrestrial murderers. While examining the equipment, the teen inadvertently mutates himself with a laserblast, and embarks upon a murderous rampage.
Review – This is a movie that was made just for mockery in all its forms. This ass cabbage of a film has got to be a contender for worst movie ever made. So sloppy and dumb that I think even the crew of the satellite of love felt bad for making fun of it. Not that it stopped them from delivering one of the best shows ever. I don’t know what drugs they were on when they made this movie but I was light headed and dizzy from laughing at it.
Far out moment: For some reason they blow up a sign that reads “Star Wars” as if to say “We rock harder!” Can’t tell you why but it happened.
WEREWOLF:
Synopsis - 1996 horror flick Werewolf begins with an archeological dig in an Arizona quarry. The Native Americans at the dig site recognize an unearthed skeleton as the remains of a werewolf, yet the team of archeologists are skeptical. When a dig assistant becomes infected and transforms into a werewolf, the ambitious team leader begins a horrific experiment, infecting the oblivious townspeople with the werewolf virus.
Review – Of all the films in this collection this one probably tried the hardest to make sense…tried and failed mind you but they get a B- for effort.
My second favorite episode in this set; they crew really pinches off this loaf and flushes it with the glee of a kid in potty training. I saved this one for last when watching the set because it didn’t strike me as having the potential for HI-larious fun but never under estimate MST3K’s ability to really work a bad movie into comedy gold.
FUTURE WAR:
Synopsis - In 1997's action-packed Future War, a race of evil cyborgs kidnap humans from Earth's future to use as slaves, and take dinosaurs from the past to use as trackers. A determined slave, the "Runaway", escapes and makes his way to present-day Los Angeles. There he must fend off the cyborgs and their trackers, the police, and the government, befriended by a prostitute-turned-nun who runs a halfway house
Review – I honestly thought this would be my favorite of the set; it has all the key elements ripe for MST3K high jinx. Who knows it might have been my favorite had they not nailed the others so well.
You know how they say it takes trends take time to reach some areas? (Like how they just got acid washed jeans in Ohio)This is a movie so goofball lame 80’s style you’ll never EVER believe that this was actually made in the 90’s (and the late 90’s at that).
The makers of this film should thank MST3K because without them it would just be a crap film.
The Set: The only thing wrong with this set is that I wish there was more of it. Not a real complaint I’m just selfish. The only complaint I have is “Wow 20 years? I suddenly feel so old”.
The collectors edition comes in a lovely tin box with all the movies above along with Collectible Lobby Cards and a Figurine of Crow T. Robot. The special features give you a look at the history of MST3K as well as the recent panel at Comic Con (which I missed so luckily I got this as a second chance WOO HOO!!)
If you are a fan or know a fan this is a great set to pick up to start or add to a collection. Even if you’ve never seen the show this would be a great way to start. Grab this and call some friends for a night of fun. Buy It Now: Rating:
