But don't let that sway you at the video store, this little love through vengence tale has some sparkle to it.
The set up is pretty much as simple as explained in the trailer. Down on his luck guy hooks up with up tight recently dumped girl in vegas, they get drunk, they get married, and they win a massive jackpot just as they sober up and realize just how much they hate each other. Ain’t love funny like that?
The bulk of the movie is of course them forced to “try” and make the marriage work for six months in order to get the split and the cash. It’s pretty far fetched and doesn’t leave much room to really maneuver this thing past the typical romantic comedy of opposites attract.
As for the vengeance; each of them has someone in their corner helping them to sabotage the other out of the dough. Which is pretty funny but never really gets vicious as it could have been. The really spiteful stuff is held back so the audience will buy into the idea that they could fall in love in the end. Honestly they could have dialed it up quite a bit more and I’d still have bought it hook line and sinker.
The movie is actually pretty cute and they do balance out some of the funny with Rob Corddry and Lake Bell who share such a volatile chemistry I could have watched an entire movie about them instead….the pay off with them is fantastic (watch the credits).
Overall: Not just another Rom-Com. Better then a punch in the nuts (you know what that was for) Buy It Now:
