If I had to make a list, an all time list of my favorite 10 movies it would be a tough list for me to make. HOWEVER! I do have a mental check list of movies I know would in the ranks. Films that range from the expected Star Wars and LOTR stuff to classics and what not. The surprising thing for some is that YES! The Nightmare Before Christmas is on this list. Not only that but that I can sing every single song in the movie from memory…and I don’t have much love for musicals.
Somewhere on my movie passport sandwiched between Hoth and Ricks Café is Halloween Town my other home away from home. Surprised Aren’t You?
Everything about this movie was classic and just stuck with me from the first viewing. During it’s first run I must have seen this in theaters a half dozen times, even going so far as to travel out of town to the low rent theaters that play movies just before they hit home video (and were talking VHS still baby). I collected the toys, the fast food watches, bed sheets, we had it all (still do in most cases).
They’ve released this a few times since on VHS and DVD and I’ve picked up all but one of those repeated dips without hesitation or complaint..and yes I’ll likely be picking up the Blu Ray version and if a 3-D version pops up that as well. This time out though they have put together a really great set of features and simply cool stuff. On top of which they’ve restored the film and it looks freakin amazing.
This set covers everything the original releases have but also we get an in depth look at Jacks Haunted Mansion, which for those not “in the know” every year at Disneyland they turn The Haunted Mansion ride into a Nightmare Before X-mas Theme. I know some of the Disney purists are going to hate me for saying it but; they really need to just re-vamp that ride and make it Nightmare Before Christmas all the time.
Along for the ride this time are Frankenweenie and Vincent (short films) which includes a brief glimpse at the upcoming stop animation version of Frankenweenie (woo hoo!), as well as an animated version of the original poem narrated by Christopher Lee.
New commentary tracks, and a ton of making of material really just pack in the punch on this one. We get it all except the 3-D version of the film. This is the set you want for viewing Nightmare Before Christmas, pick this one up and give the version you have to someone who’s never seen it and spread the joy.
Few films come along that really earn that hip tag line of “Instant Classic” but I assure you this one does. If you have any sense of imagination or even just an ear for catchy tunes this movie will move you in some way. Buy It Now: Rating:
