Over The Edge Store Exclusives: One Can Only Hope Review: Lets face it this is a good month to be a fan of the Bat. The Dark Knight rocks and there is a slew of cool Batman related stuff hitting DVD, toy, and book shelves. I think I’ve spent more time in Gotham City than I have in reality so far this month…only fitting it began with a Animatrix style DVD featuring the Bat.
Unlike the aforementioned Animatrix this one has more interlocking stories and framework to it. The stories build off each other and are part of a larger picture.
While the stories might have common threads the look and feel are like watching Batman through a kaleidoscope or through the eyes of some great artist who’s had a Gotham City meltdown. Listen closely and you’ll hear some familiar voices from the universe of Batman as well. NICE!!
While it’s a great little experiment and a lot of fun to watch for a anime fan like myself, I’m not sure this is do well with others who are not familiar or have no love of anime. The stories are a bit too rushed at times and it starts to feel like you are reading Cliffnotes From Gotham City rather than a fully developed Bat movie. Sort of like having some of the best cake you’ve ever eaten but the portions are just too damn small. With any luck DC and WB will continue this interesting line of thought and take another stab at it perhaps with less stories but more cake.
I love what they are doing over there at the DC/WB with these direct to DVD titles. Wonder Woman looks to be shaping up well and everything so far as been great for the fans. Seems like it’ll only be a matter of time before they start making every Fanboys dream and give us The Dark Knight Returns The Animated Feature Film. In any case it seems they are on the right track and who knows what’s in the works.
Like I said it’s a good time to be a fan. Buy It Now: Rating:
