Version: Standard Store Exclusives: One Can Only Hope. Review: This is one of those shows that I missed entirely on TV. I heard of it but never saw it. I made the assumption that it was created as a more girlie version of Smallville (yes I said more girlie version of). I know I know I’m risking making an ass out of U and umption. I rejected Smallville at first, didn’t get the appeal of it and I ignored it for the first three or four seasons….now I’m hooked and I’ve seen em all. But would Birds of Prey be shot down or soar?
This time my assumptions were right on the money.
The show has a strange vision of how to handle these heroes and its audience. There are parts where things get rolling and a glimmer of hope escapes your mind for this thing to just nail it. But those parts are just too few and far between and more often than not it fails. Mostly it’s just poor writing and ideas based on a concept not an actual story. Sort of sad in a way lighting could have easily struck twice.
I hate to take a review off the rails and target a single person on a project and point the finger of failure at him or her, it’s not really fair to rail someone…but I’m sorry this has to be said or I’ll feel like I’m not really throwing out my honest opinion. Among the shows other flaws is Shemar Moore. I’ve never seen any of his other work, so for all I know this guy is a step shy of being Knighted by the Queen of England for his fine works on the stage and screen…..however in Birds of Prey he is amazingly awful on so many levels. He takes his role here with such blasé disrespect you can feel him balancing his checkbook in his head…so much so that you can nearly see him walk to his marks stop and deliver his special brand of crap. Don’t get me wrong everyone phones in some work from time to time but this guy never shows up at all. *ok..deep breath..I’m done lets move on*
New Gotham? Ummm ok if you have to. Did they even look closely at the characters mythology? Harley Quinn as the ever secretive master villain? Ok this I can buy but she’s so all over the place and not very secretive finding her out would take the Batman about 45 seconds during a nap. Batgirl/Oracle should have at least stumbled across her link to all this stuff by the end of the first commercial break. Again piss poor writing.
What’s to like about? Girls in tight outfits? Yeah Baby! Dina Meyers? Mmmmm yummy. Ok there’s more to like than that, the show is campy and if you can let go of the flaws it comes together as a small bit of escapism for Batman fans or something to fill the void between Smallville sets.
Overall: Not great, not the worst thing ever…and it’s got Dina Meyer and Ashley Scott. Did I mention the tight leather outfits? Buy It Now:
