It can come and go like the tide or only appear to be as rare as a comet. It can flood your life with happiness, or wash away every rational thought in your head. It can be a brilliant light show streaking across the night sky or smash your world to bits.
Have you ever sat back to look at the loves in your life trying to define the overall story that links them together? This one led to that one and the one you have now? I’ve thought about these things a lot in my lifetime. How even if I could go back in time and warn myself to avoid even a single one of them I wouldn’t be where I am right now. Sure there are times where right here right now is not exactly sunshine and lollypops but ultimately each love that comes into your life has a purpose and it’s up to you to find it and learn from it and try to get it right the next time around.
Imagine for a moment someone asked you to tell a story about three of the great loves of your lifetime. How will your story sound and how does it end? With a whimper or with a bang? (not that kind of bang pervs)
That’s the premise of Definitely, Maybe. Much like How I Met Your Mother it’s a love story sort of in reverse. It’s a wonderful framework for William Hayes (Reynolds) to enlighten his daughter Maya (Breslin) about the loves of his life and where she and her mother fit into his life.
Will has some big dream when we met his younger counter part, and despite his wholesome ideals and dreams he just cannot find the right woman or job to get that life going. Throughout the story there are three women who much like those comets I mentioned zoom past lighting up the sky before vanishing until the next go round.
Considering the three women…we should all be so lucky: Rachel Weisz, Isla Fisher, and Elizabeth Banks…come on! Who’s this lucky? Then again to be fair Reynolds has dated God so I guess it goes without saying. Lets continue.
As the map to Will’s love life unfolds his daughter is suppose to be guessing which one of these women are her Mother (the names have been changed to protect the guilty). It’s touching to watch the relationship between Will and Maya, Hollywood doesn’t always show the close bonds a father and child can have and it’s nice for a change.
Each of the women have moments of toe curling sugar coated love for Will and yet each of the woman are flawed and real which causes Maya to bounce back and forth between which one she believes to be her mother and the one she wants to be her mother. Much like real life you don’t get to pick your parents and you have to love them warts and all….sorry kid.
Thankfully the story shifts enough and avoids most of the predictable trappings of a romantic comedy, it stays fresh and you’ll find yourself rooting for the girl you like best.
Overall: This is another one of those good date movies you can pick up and watch with your girl or guy and not totally alienate the other. Sure there might not be any car chases or explosions but the comedy is solid and it’s not too mushy. Buy It Now: Rating:
