Sorry the guy just isn't funny to me and comes off like nails on a chalk board to my senses. But I have loved Adam's style of comedy since first hearing him on Love Line and later on the Man Show. He's just got that everyday schlub sense of humor that works in so many ways.
It’s like hearing the biggest class clown/loser in high school spinning those faults into career gold just by being himself. He might not be able to play the sexy leading man but he’s got a niche and he’s going to ride it to fame and fortune….and there’s not a damn thing wrong with that baby!
The Hammer was the love child of all Adam’s niche banging work and he’s been a good babies daddy for it. Sure it didn’t get the run in theaters it should have but he fought hard for it and he fought hard making it. The story is fairly simple; Guy turns 40 and realizes his life just sucks. It only gets worse of course forcing him to crawl up from the bottom.
As it turns out this out of work carpenter has another skill besides slacking off and pounding down a few nails and as many beers…he has some skill in the ring. Though he’d given up competing he’s been teaching at a local gym as a second job and as fate would have it he’s about to get a second shot in the ring.
Now you’d expect that this is going to follow the formula laid out by Rocky Balboa…don’t. This movie isn’t about overcome odds, it’s about just being more than you have been. So with the help of Ozzie (Oswaldo Castillo from the radio show) he’ll rise to the challenge of being an Olympic contender.
The movie is more sweet hearted than I was expecting from Adam. He’s a nice guy with a good heart in the movie despite his gruff mentality and sharp wit. He takes care of his best friend and doesn’t hide his love for his woman. Even his enemies don’t get the full brunt of his rage. He just takes things in stride and let life happen to him instead of fighting it every step of the way.
Overall: This is one nearly straight to video release that you should check out, it’s got plenty of laughs, and a solid story. If you enjoy Adam’s comedy you’ll enjoy this, if you hate it this isn’t going to change your mind. Buy It Now: Rating:
