Normally I love a good adventure flick but in the past few years good adventure movies have been few and far between and worse when mixed with romance. The last such flick being "Into the Blue" staring Paul Walker, Jessica Alba's ass, and a plot more transparant than the waters it was filmed in. So I dove into the waters of Fool's Gold hoping not to get cramps (though I did wait for 30 minutes after eating just to be safe).
Everything about this one is very formulaic and easy, it doesn't patronize you for not having read dozens of books about treasure hunting or history (National Treasure I'm looking at you) and doesn't dumb it down so much that you hate yourself for enjoying it. I really can't fault this one for just being an easy flick to kick back and watch, it's not great by any stretch but it does entertain enough to keep it interesting and light. For the sake of you people who are going to take this one in over the weekend and would rather make out than watch the screen I'm going to spoil the entire thing starting...NOW.
Ben 'Finn' Finnegan (McConaughey) and Tess Finnegan (Hudson) are on the verge of divorce when the film begins, Finn has wasted 8 years of thier lives searching for "The Queen Dowry" and just in the nick of time he's found a big clue to the location of the sunken ship and it's massive treasure. One thing leds to another and she gets roped into helping find the treasure once more and she's taking her boss Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland) and his Paris Hilton'esq. daughter Gemma (Alexis Dziena) along for the ride. In the mix of all this we have another treasure Moe Fitch (Ray Winstone) who is working for Bigg Bunny (Kevin Hart) the rapper turned treasure enthusiast. When all is said and done they find the treasure and rekindle the love they once had. Ta Da! you are free to make out...and you are welcome!
Normally I'm not a fan of Matthew McConaughey or Kate Hudson, both lovely people and decent at thier craft but their resumes just don't hold much for me. Have to say are both good in this one and share quite a bit of chemistry on screen. Just check your mind at the door and have some fun with this one. Buy It Now: Rating:
