Game On!: The Zombie Party Game
Written by Mikey
May 11, 2008

Bored To Death? Why wait for the Undead Apocalypse.. Have some Zombie fun today.

ImageAnyone who knows me knows my love of zombie movies. It's a tough love to have considering 97% of the genre is pure crap on a splintered stick.

Over the weekend I finally left the dark recesses of my cave in the House of M and took Henry to his best pal Jevon's Birthday party. I know that many of you reading this might look at this as a form of torture, and lets face it kids birthday parties are pretty much a test of patience and embarrassment for adults. However once again anyone who knows me knows I could make a 4 day seminar on foot and mouth disease fun.

Being the good brother from another mother that I am to Rachel (mother of Jevon) I arrived early to help set up this shin dig. Naturally while she's away a few parents decided to bring their kids by early. Yikes!

In true geek fashion I made up a quick game for the kids to play while they waited for the bounce house to get set up and the real party to begin. The game went over so well the kids insisted on playing many rounds of it throughout the day and I thought I'd share with you readers and try and spread the magic of "Zombiez".  Enjoy.

The Game: Zombiez

The Rulez:

1) One person is selected as the "Infected".

2) Once they tag someone that person is also a now a zombie along with them.

3) Once you become a zombie for that round you stay a zombie for the entire round.

4) Once infected you have to continually say "I'm a zombieeeee" Not only is this helpful to know who's been infected its freakin funny to watch half a dozen people running about chasing others yelling it.

5) If someone goes out of bounds they are then infected as well.

6) Last person not infected is the "survivor" of the round and the winner.

7) The winner of the previous round picks the first infected of the next round.

Clearly this is a game of fast moving zombies not the slow shuffling type; otherwise it"ll take to long to play.

Oddly I was shocked that not a single parent got bent out of shape by this game given that not a single child was over the age of 8 and more than half of them little girls. But I kid you not the game was a HUGE hit.

Invite some Zombiez to your next party.

Enjoy
M

A party game without drinking isn't a party game. all the "infected" should have take a shot, so their walk is more similiar to real zombies.

No.3  Drinking?
Yea, because little kids should be drinking! That's smart. How about YOU take a shot of something and go play in traffic.

No.6  I like it but how about.....
...instead of "I'm a zombie" have the infected say "brainzzzz"?

You let children play this game ??? This is terrible. You're teaching these children horrible values. I will shun your wicked ways and raise my children properly. I will raise them to understand that Running zombies are NOT proper zombies and should not be condoned in any way. To teach children that running zombies are 'okay' and 'natural' should be considered child abuse. The running zombie is a cancer upon the genre and It'll take a helicopter blade lobotomy to convince me otherwise. I said good day, sir.

While I agree that running zombies are a blight on the genre, the game would be boring otherwise. Perhaps an adult version of the game with booze and slow moving zombies is in order.

You taught them how to play tag? Ingenious.

You are great! As a zombielover, I agree that 97% of the movies are crap - thank you! This is an excellent game. congrats on your cleverness.

I think this would be a great idea for little kids and the fact that some people seem only able to have fun by incorporating alcohol is just pethetic. I really hope that people wake up.

No.14  Me too!
I too love zombie movies! A few weeks ago after watching the new Day of the Dead on dvd as soon as it came out,I made up a zombie game with my two nephews. Basically I just turned off the light and pretended to be a zombie chasing them around. I was pretty convincing if I do say so myself. I mostly made zombie noises and tickled them and occasionally nibbled on them a little bit. They\'re 10 and 9 years old and we\'ve basically raised them on horror movies so they didn\'t get too scared. Though after not breaking character for about 20 minutes I did spook one of them. We\'ve played it one other time where there was more room to run around. They\'ve been begging me to play it everyday since that first night. I\'m the fun aunt!

If you wanted to be edgy, you could tell the kids that instead of becoming zombies, they were infected with AIDS

No.17  Zombie Fun Time
This is awesome. They sell spray on chalk in toy stores and you can make your boundaries odd shapes (to create alleys and such where it is easier to catch the foolish). What a great summer ideas for the not-so-prudish (which fortunately includes almost all kids)! Thanks for sharing.

Cool. I've done this for years. I tended to be the local playground for the neighbourhood kids so one day when the kids wanted to play tag again and I was tired, I decided to even the field. You can tire out a few kids but not a dozen or more because they naturally take shifts and the active ones want the attention of the grown up. I came up with zombie tag to even the playing field. Our rules are slightly different:
1) Zombies can only walk and must hold out their arms in front of them (this gets sore in long games).
2)The area of play is limited and anyone who leaves it is automatically a zombie.
3) We start with one zombie.
4) Anyone tagged by a zombie who is sticking to rule 1 is automatically a zombie.
5) Non-zombies can run but there are (generally) no time outs in zombie tag (the exception has been a car in a cul-de-sac) because the zombies move slowly.
6) The last person caught by the crowd of zombies is the first zombie of the next game.
This is a good game that can be played with a mixture of ages. The smaller kids tend to get caught earlier and then enjoy hunting the bigger kids. The bigger kids enjoy the challenge of the end game. The game starts slow but speeds up as the number of zombies increases - the last few people need to run quickly and skilfully to avoid the zombie crowds. The new first zombie always starts tired. The play area has to be well defined and sized appropriately for the number of people. The game has been very popular in our area. Our zombies don\'t tend to make sounds but one kid started saying "brains" and I changed it to something far scarier - for a couple of years we had a large number of zombies stumbling around moaning "Broccoli...broccoli..." I won't even start on the Broccoli monster game.

No.20  Grownup messy version
Buy a whole lot of pizza and 151. Zombies have to smear pizza on their face so you know their zombies and also have to take 3 shots when infected so they become more zombieish. And I agree that children should most definitely not be taught that zombies can run. Cuz they can't. Bitch. Pizza face drunk zombies are way more realistic. Trust me.

This is change reaction tag and is an example of exponential growth. Instead of zombies, each tagged person is changed into a cyborg and runs around yelling \"the singularity is near\". The last person remaining yells \"Kurzweil\".
