That said I looked at the trailers for this one with some hope of a slightly fun movie.
Trouble is that this movie suffers from a serious chemistry problem. Gerry (Butler) is this really fun, adorable (yes I called him adorable) guy who’s so full of life even in death. However Holly (Swank) is just Debbie downer annoying self centered twit that while I could see Gerry pulling a “hit it and quit it” I can’t see him spending more with her than that. Sure I get the idea that opposites attract, but this is pure rom-com trappings at its worst.
Now the movie isn’t without its joys. It is fun to watch Gerry’s plan for getting her back on her feet after his death unfold. Even if you’ll be consistently annoyed at her reactions to it. The plot itself takes you on a ride from the beginnings of their relationship to her future without him and it would have been great had her character actually fit into this world.
It’s not just her that doesn’t fit, most of the supporting characters are just formulated people drawn out of a hat and plopped into the story and none of them fleshed out beyond the white slip of paper that got pulled out of that hat. Which would again be forgivable had they given some chemistry between the two main characters.
Overall: While the movie is cute and somewhat enjoyable it will wear on you after awhile and you’ll start to wonder if Gerry looked forward to his death and planned out this elaborate plot to help her move on so he wouldn’t have to deal with her in the afterlife. Buy It Now: Rating:
