Drama Director: David Schwimmer Writers: Michael Ian Black, Simon Pegg Cast: Simon Pegg, Thandie Newton, Hank Azaria, Dylan Moran, India de Beaufort, Harish Patel, Matthew Fenton Synopsis: DENNIS (Simon Pegg) is an ordinary guy. He’s a little overweight and he smokes, but he’s nice, charming and unassuming. However, five years ago, Dennis did something that wasn’t so nice.
On his wedding day to his pregnant fiancé LIBBY (Thandie Newton), Dennis did a runner. He just couldn’t go through with it. He didn’t think he was good enough for Libby, so instead of ruining her life, he ruined her big day.
Now, five years later, Dennis realizes he made a big mistake. He’s still in love with Libby. He still sees her all the time because of JAKE (Matthew Fenton), their five-year-old son, but all romantic ties have been severed. Libby’s now seeing WHIT (Hank Azaria), a charming professional from the City, and Dennis takes an immediate dislike to him. Whit is casual, easy-going, successful and good with Jake; much to Dennis’s annoyance.
How can Dennis compete with him? The Review: I find it very odd watching Run Fat Boy Run; firstly Simon Pegg is not anywhere near "fat" hell he's not even "fluffy", sure he's carrying around a bit of a beer gut and is way out of shape. But fat? Not so much. Secondly it's so strange to watch a movie made in London by Ross from Friends.
Those two things aside lets talk about plot; which is in a nut shell of "If I can finish this race I can get my girl back and prove everyone wrong about what a fuck up I am". Don't let me sell you short on this though it's actually a pretty charming movie taken as a light bit of comedy and David Schwimmer does a decent job behind the camera on this flick.
Given the plot the movies heart is left for Simon Pegg to carry along to the finish line (pun sadly intended), but hey! This is Simon Pegg so you are in good hands, plus he has back up from Shaun of The Dead’s Dylan Moran as the best bud and eye candy Thandie Newton. To round things out we have Hank Azaria to play against Pegg for Newton’s affections in a race for her heart.
The movie itself is quite honestly a quick bit of escapism, it’s just meant to entertain you for 100 minutes and be done and forgotten. Which is totally fine, not every movie sets out to set the world on fire or change your perceptions. Just let it entertain you and enjoy…if you somehow wind up hitting the gym afterwards…well good for you. Rating:
