From legendary frightmaster Stephen King and Academy Award nominated director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) comes one of the most tense and terrifying films since The Shining. After a mysterious mist envelops a small New England town, a group of locals trapped in a supermarket must battle a siege of otherworldly creatures...and the fears that threaten to tear them apart. Starring Thomas Jane (The Punisher) and Oscar Winner Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River) in one of the year's most talked about performances, The Mist "is not only one of the best movies of 2007, it's one of the best horror films ever made, period!"
REVIEW (MOVIE):
Based on one of Stephen King's best short stories, written and directed by THE BEST Stephen king adapter, Frank Darabont, and staring a man who is arguably one of the coolest mother f-ers on the planet, Thomas Jane, The Mist had kick-ass written all over it from the moment I first saw some jucy footage (and a somewhat inebriated seeming Jane) at Comic-Con. I kicked myself in the heiney for not getting out to the theatres to see this one (2 year old kid... what're you gonna do?). So imagine my excitement when I got this little 2 disc set of ooey goodness delivered to my doorstep...
The night came to watch! I had my faithful compadre M with me, we got drunk (Hey, if Jane was pretty hammered when he watched the footage at Comic-Con, he seemed to enjoy it), we settled in and let the little disc spin!
Two hours later, we both sat there dumb-founded... "How could they F- that up?? It was a slam dunk!" But, somehow they did. "The Mist", aside from a few jolts (especially involving a nest of intergalactic spiders - creepy bastards!!! I HATE those little 8-legged f-ers!) this movie just falls flat - crushed under the weight of preachy dialogue, flat characterizations, and all sorts of mundane drivel.
I will admit, Marcia Gay Harden did take her role, bad-over the top dialouge and all, and run with it - totally stealing the show. Tom Jane seems to sleepwalk through the proceedings in a daze (must have still been hammered? I was!).
Then... there is the ending. Could have been really potent if it wasn't for the timing... (I won't spoil it but just remember the following- "really?? you couldn't just wait it out even 5 minutes???) You'll know what I mean....
All-in-all this is one of those quintessential "it had its moments" kind of movies... Had some fun grooving with it, but largely forgettable.
REVIEW (DVD):
Now, the DVD is a different matter entirely.
First of all, the video transfer is crystal clear for regular DVD. The 5.1 Surround set is aggressive and a "cavalcade of fun" to be in the middle of.
As for Special Features, just look at the laundry list above- the deleted scenes are less forgettable than the movie, the Drew Struzen featurette was nice, and well deserved! Disc 2 features one of the oddest special features I've seen in years... the entire movie in black and white... why?? Can't you just change a simple setting on your TV for that? - Weird! There is a nice selection of featurettes to cap things off.
OVER ALL-
The movie wasn't the greatest in either Color or Black and White, but the DVD actually is a rather nice set. Buy It Now: Rating:
