Want a perfectly prepared dish of tender quail in truffle sauce? Kate (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a workaholic master chef, can do that. But don't ask her what to do about the free-spirited, opera-loving sous shef (Aaron Eckhart) who joins the staff of her upscale Manhattan restaurant. Or what to do about the orphaned niece (Abigail Breslin) who comes to live with her. "I wish there was a cookbook for life, with recipes telling us exactly what to do", Kate tells her therapist. A love of life (and of great food!) spices up this warm-hearted and funny tale about a woman discovering a world bigger than her kitchen.
Review:
The ads were pretty off-putting; Catherine Zeta-Jones as an ice princess, the ever charming Aaron Eckhart pursuing despite her total lack of charm... Pretty formulaic, yes?
Maybe not.
Welcome to the Deez & Rori two part review of No Reservations.
D – This was definitely not the kind of movie I had on my “must see” list (I think I passed this one over for a 6th viewing of Transformers). What can I say? Just not the “Chick Flick” kind of guy (it’s one of the great benefits of being married - you don’t have to fake interest in these movies to get laid!). Well, I hate to admit this (but I am secure enough in my manhood to admit), but I actually cried - dare I say, wept at the start of this movie as Kate’s (Zeta-Jones) sister is killed in a car accident, and Kate learns that she has to take care of her young niece, Zoe (Breslin). This movie somehow sucked me in from the get-go and totally took me by surprise. In my defense, I have some majorly stressful BS going on at a little thing I like to call “my day job” which has contributed to some seriously frayed emotions… I know, it’s a weak excuse for the waterworks, but I’m sticking to my story…
Mrs. D – I ignored the first half of this movie over my computer screen. Figured that the trailers told enough of the apparently annoying storyline. Then I got sucked in. I admit it – It is in fact somewhat cliché, but the movie held its ground by the end. I may have even been a little teary-eyed, definitely was willing to forgive Eckhart his orange Crocs, and finally had to cope with having been… WRONG!!! This movie didn’t suck. It was kinda charming.
D – I have to say, I dug it! After I got a hold of my manhood and dried my eyes, the movie settled into a more formulaic romantic comedy, not nearly as annoying as I expected. For one thing, Aaron Eckhart can do no wrong (I have forgiven him for “Erin Brokovitch”). Catherine Zeta Jones is stunning as always (seriously… she’s the reason I’m with T-Mobile, I’m just waitin for her to put me in her top five). Their chemistry does overcome some shoddy script work, and horrible wardrobe choices for my man Eckhart.
Mrs. D –I’m in no mood for gratuitous “my sister died, I hate kids, but now I’m in charge of one, so I guess I’ll have to go through a montage or so while I transform from ice-queen to fun kitchen chick” fare; yet here I am, thinking perhaps this wasn’t horrible. It’s a new spin on classic fairy tale themes that even I am a sucker for; girl too caught up in her life to realize she’s perfect, noticed by way hunky man who falls in love, pines, plots, and braves all obstacles to convince her that she’s lovable, noble, and that they can have happily ever after together, including orphaned smartypants niece.
D – I must say, by the end of the movie I was hooked. After an absolutely crappy ass few days, I fully expected to sit here and tear this movie apart (mostly due to my mood), but this little flick was cinematic comfort food. Charming and romantic like a nice Tiramisu.
D- All in all, I’d definitely order this one from the menu! 4/5
