That is one seriously long title ain't it? Much like the other half of the Branglina phalanx; Lara Croft Tomb Raider and The Cradle of Life. I think the next flick should be Mr and Mrs Smith: The Kingdom of Narcoleptic Swingers Convention. I'm just saying. When I see a new film with an insanely long title, I wonder how many other people like myself will go up to the window and blurt the whole thing out when asking for their ticket? I know I do, but I'm really into self amusement...which I must thank Angelina for providing some of the ammo for.
2000 and 7 will be known for many things in terms of films, but two standouts would have to be the long dying but never dead form of the Western coming out swinging with two high profile movies (3:10 To Yuma and The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, respectively). What's more interesting is that both were good films, yet vastly different. 3:10 was much more good guy/bad guy focused, where Jesse James has more in common with "I Shot Andy Warhol"...I know some of you must be scratching your heads by that last statement, but I assure you, once you see the film, you'll understand. You see, Jesse James was sort of a Robin Hood figure in the old west; they wrote books about him, he was in the news and people either feared him or wanted to be him. Robert Ford adored Jesse with Fanboy resolve, and when he finally got his shot to ride with him...well it would be like George Lucas calling me up and asking me to write the next Star Wars saga....or alternatively, like some of you girls being asked to spit shine Brad's six shooter.
As the story unfolds, Roberts love for Jesse becomes more and more soiled as he finds reality a bitter pill. With the law bearing down on Jesse, he grows more and more paranoid and scary, and soon he's whacking out his gang Goodfellas style. Fear and bitter reality set in, and Robert decides that if anyone takes down Jesse, it should be him; and the movie takes a serious downward turn. You know it's coming, you don't even have to know history; it's right there in the title "The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford", but you can't help but root for a different outcome...but much like Titanic there's just no avoiding that iceberg no matter how much you yell at the screen. Eventually Robert does bust a cap into Jesse and begins his rise and fall from fame to coward.
It's one of those stories about being careful what you wish for, and damned if it's not tragic all around.
The film is solid and Casey Affleck really does shine as the creepy little Robert. Andrew Dominik has made himself a very masterful film and it'll be interesting to see how it changes the conventional western genre...if there is a conventional western anymore.
The only downside to the film is for you people that rent this thinking you'll be kicking back with some old school western action and flying bullets. This is an art film far more than it is a western, so just know what you are picking up at that rental counter. Buy It Now: Rating:
