Comedy Director: Andy Tennant Writers: John Claflinm, Daniel Zelman, Andy Tennant Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Donald Sutherland, Ewen Bremner, Alexis Dziena, Kevin Hart, Ray Winstone Synopsis: Ben “Finn” Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) is an affable, modern-day treasure hunter who is obsessed with finding the legendary 18th century Queen’s Dowry—40 chests of priceless treasure that was lost at sea in 1715. In his quest, Finn has sunk everything he has, including his marriage to Tess (Kate Hudson).
Just as Tess has begun to rebuild her life, working aboard a mega-yacht owned by billionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland), Finn discovers a vital clue to the treasure’s whereabouts. Much to Tess’ consternation, Finn maneuvers himself aboard Nigel’s yacht and, using his roguish charm, convinces the tycoon and his celebutante daughter, Gemma (Alexis Dziena), to join him in the pursuit of the Spanish riches. Even Tess can’t resist the lure of finally uncovering the treasure that had eluded them for so long.
But they are not the only ones after the prize. Finn’s one-time mentor, Moe Fitch (Ray Winstone), and a ruthless local gangster (Kevin Hart) are intent on beating Finn to the trove. Let the treasure hunt begin… The Review: Ahhh yes Valentine's Day must be fast approaching, every DVD landing on door step and every screening on my calendar is some romantic comedy or some relationship impaired movie about two people very much in love yet very wrong for each other. For the single, it can be hell or hope for a quick hook up; for the socially inept, just another awkward day (not talking about me, I'm seven shades of suave baby!), for the couples, a near guarantee of booty...but for Hollywood it's a chance to whip out all those romance flicks and try to make some bucks off a sure date night weekend. Oh, speaking of date night...if any of you girls reading this want to take a guy out on the town, I'm not just the Big Film Geek round here, I'm also the site's official Man-whore (elected more by default than choice).
Tonight’s romance flick of choice is a Treasure Hunting adventure featuring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, something in the vein of Romancing the Stone, or perhaps National Treasure "Lite" (I mean that in a good way).
Normally I love a good adventure flick, but in the past few years, good adventure movies have been few and far between, and worse when mixed with romance. The last such flick being "Into the Blue" staring Paul Walker, Jessica Alba's ass, and a plot more transparant than the waters it was filmed in. So I dove into the waters of Fool's Gold hoping not to get cramps (though I did wait for 30 minutes after eating just to be safe).
Everything about this one is very formulaic and easy; it doesn't patronize you for not having read dozens of books about treasure hunting or history (National Treasure, I'm looking at you) and doesn't dumb it down so much that you hate yourself for enjoying it. I really can't fault this one for just being an easy flick to kick back and watch, it's not great by any stretch but it does entertain enough to keep it interesting and light. For the sake of you people who are going to take this one in over the weekend and would rather make out than watch the screen, I'm going to spoil the entire thing starting...NOW.
Ben 'Finn' Finnegan (McConaughey) and Tess Finnegan (Hudson) are on the verge of divorce when the film begins; Finn has wasted 8 years of their lives searching for "The Queen's Dowry", and just in the nick of time he's found a big clue to the location of the sunken ship and its massive treasure. One thing leeds to another, Tess gets roped into helping find the treasure once more, and she's taking her boss Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland) and his Paris Hilton-esque daughter Gemma (Alexis Dziena) along for the ride. In the mix of all this we have another treasure hunter, Moe Fitch (Ray Winstone) who is working for Bigg Bunny (Kevin Hart), rapper turned treasure enthusiast. When all is said and done they find the treasure and rekindle the love they once had. Ta Da! you are free to make out...and you are welcome!
Normally I'm not a fan of Matthew McConaughey or Kate Hudson, both lovely people and decent at thier craft but their resumes just don't hold much for me. Have to say are both good in this one and share quite a bit of chemistry on screen.
Just check your mind at the door and have some fun with this one. Rating:
