Review: The odds are that someone reading this knows someone at some point who has uttered the words "That's it I'm moving to Canada!" (Excluding our readers from Canada of course) over one reason or another. Maybe not but the makers of Blue State are banking on this statistic.
I know I've said it plenty of times. Let's be honest the grass is always greener on the other side and damn if Canada doesn't have some very lush very green grass when viewing it from this side of the border.
Have I ever been to Canada? Nope. Would I like to? I would love to visit, and watching this flick I can tell you the prospect doesn't seem too bad.
Here's the basic plot: Fed up liberal campaign manager (Breckin Meyer) vows during the election that if George W Bush wins again he's catching the last train to Canuckville and he'll meet you at the station. Oops Bush won and now he's got to put up or shut up. With his election dreams shattered, no job to return to, and getting the news his girlfriend has moved on during the election Canada's looking pretty damn green. To add bait to the hook he gets contacted by a website called www.marryacanadian.com (which is a REAL site for those looking for an escape hatch) which is offering to help get him a fresh start up north.
While he makes his escape plan he decides to take on a ride share to help budget the cost of the trip....enter Chloe (Anna Paquin) the hot little roguek'ish chick he quickly signs up as his co-pilot. Wouldn't be any fun if Chloe didn't have a secret or two right? Turns out she's a military deserter and bailing rather than go back to Iraq.
As the story moves on tension and sparks fly between our rogue'ish little hottie and the uptight owner of Garfield. She teaches him to be less uptight and...he teaches her to drive stick.
All pretty standard really, opposites attract and all that. He figures out that he's running away from his problems and she decides to go back to the states to face the music of her past to clear her future and they both figure out that the words to "O Canada" are to difficult to memorize and they bolt back for the states.
While this movie is just formula right out of the box I have to admit it does hold up and entertain you while it runs its course.
Breckin earns some points back after those Garfield movies (stay on the wagon buddy I know you can do it, screw that pasta eating puss) and Anna gets to play it a little rough around the edges.
A great rental for those in the mood for a little light romantic comedy. Buy It Now: Rating:
