The Review: A Lord of the Rings rip-off Video Game adaptation, a crappy script, Ray Liotta as an evil sorcerer… BURT REYNOLDS AS A WISE AND BENVOLENT KING???? This can only mean one thing…
...We have another Uwe Boll movie on our hands!!!
I have to admit (before M, the bastard, rats my ass out) I am a closet Uwe Boll fan. You have to be impressed when enthusiasm alone allows him to keep making movies despite clearly having absolutely no F-ing clue what he is doing. Boll is quite probably the Ed Wood of our generation!
It was with that childish enthusiasm that I skipped to the local multiplex to check out Mr. Boll's latest Crap opus, In the Name of the King.
I must say (and I don't believe I have EVER said this before), the movie was much better than I expected, and I was disappointed by that fact.
The true charm in Boll’s masterpieces is their utter ineptitude, they are truly so bad, they are classics. In the Name of the King was just not bad enough to qualify.
In fact, I would say, 80% of King was actually pretty good - decent direction, good use of a beautiful landscape, decent action scenes, and a great casting choice in the venerable Ron Perlman. This movie COULD have been really good (even for an actual movie)!
BUT, the 20% of the classic Uwe we all know and love keeps this from being a decent movie. The horrible dialogue, bad edits (especially the opening where the average scene lasts less then a minute) and, of course, the occasionally deplorable casting; King has it in SPADES!
Now, Burt Reynolds ALMOST pulls off his role as King- you almost forget that this kingdom is under the rule of Smokey (or was it the Bandit? I can never remember). Worse yet is the role of Gallian- the all powerful and evil sorcerer/mage; when I think medieval wizardry, I think… Ray Liotta! I was certainly under his spell during the movie... I had to cringe whenever he was on the screen!
So this movie gets caught in a sad, sad middle ground of suckage. Too God awful for a regular movie, but a little too good to be a Uwe Boll masterpiece. This movie has nothing to offer any moviegoer... even me! Rating:
