REVIEW (movie):
It's too bad I've already made my "Top 10 Films of 2007" list before getting a chance to see this because this flick could have easily made that list!
"3:10 to Yuma" is one Kick-Ass old school thrill ride! This is easily the manliest movie in recent history with Bale's good `ol boy hero, Crowe looking as menacing as possible (without being drunk and having a telephone ready to hurl at ya!), and the ever so psycho Ben Foster (who the hell gave that crazy ass f-er a gun???) and the ever so cool Peter Fonda- this film just spits out testosterone like a big fat wad of chew, from a grizzled cattle rancher!
Aside from the raw manliness, this is a very well told action thriller- director Mangold (Walk the Line) makes a brilliant transition to the action/western genre bringing his finely-tuned craft for the dramatic into this shoot-em-up gunslinger tale.
The Performances are all top-rate and the action scenes, especially the climatic battle are of the chain!
This movie just fires on all cylinders, it’s a definite must see!
REVIEW (The Disc)
The audio/video on this puppy is top notch! The Blu-Ray version boasts a nice HiDef picture pushing mid 30s MPBS at times, but it keeps the slightly grainy look necessary for the look of the western, The regular DVD is also impressive with a picture more than suitable for the medium.
The Sound... oh the sound!! This is one of the best Audio tracks in recent history. The dialogue is crisp, the sound is clean, and the gun fight at the end is one of the best surround demos you could ask for!!! (Even the 5.1 EX on the regular DVD has that!)
As for special features this disc is well stocked on both versions with the Standard DVD we start with a very informative and enlightening commentary with director Mangold (really only for the true film Geeks); next is a nice selection of Deleted Scenes- mostly just minor scene extensions. Following that, are a nice selection of featurettes, both on the film and on history and lore of the outlaw. None are terribly amazing on their own, but they are a really nice compliment to the movie.
Now, for the Blu-Ray edition, you take all that and add 3 more featurettes, mostly short vignettes about the score, and props of the film. There is the interactive timeline of the West: A year by year guide to all the major events of the Old West, and above all that, there is the "Inside Yuma" Interactive Experience, where you can view the script, storyboards and SFX video, picture-in-picture while watching the film... the interactivity is a little clunky, but a nice experienced none the less...
OVER ALL-
The first "Must Own" DVD of the year! Both the Movie and DVD are top-rate, and would make a fine addition to anyone's collection! (If you are thinking of getting a PS3 or Blu-Ray Player... this is a definite by on Blu-Ray) You will not be disappointed! Buy It Now: Rating:
