Mikey chews the fat about 28 Weeks Later with raging zombies over tea and crumpets...yum!
Ok here's the deal, I'm going to be upfront with you right now: I LOVE ZOMBIE MOVIES!! Much like films based on comic books I tend to have a love/hate relationship with them while at the same time I give them leeway that other films don't get. Basically they get automatic bonus points for just being a zombie flick, but if it's not good I'll be tougher on them in the long run.
That said being said I really dug 28 Days Later. It was something new in the genre, not quite cannibal's not quite zombies. They move fast, scream, and vomit infected blood on you. Nice and creepy just the way I like it. But the movie suffered for some seriously dragging moments and it felt like it got a little side tracked at times. Overall still a tense little survival flick.
Now it's 28 Weeks Later and the infected have died of starvation and the good ol US of A is helping to reclaim jolly old England. What could possibly go wrong? Well it wouldn't be much a movie if everything went to plan so naturally the shit hits the fan and it's of and running to survive and contain the mess before it spreads like VD in Paris Hiltons cell block.
Robert Carlyle (Don) is a survivor of the first outbreak, during which in a moment of panic he ditched his wife (Catherine McCormack) to save his own sorry skin. 28 Weeks later he is reunited with his kids. Things are looking up and his one of the civilians in charge of helping the re-settlement, ok really he's a glorified janitor but the point is he has a key card that gives him access to pretty much anywhere...why? Well I don't know but without that things wouldn't fit the fan and this would be a pointless movie about a near outbreak so lets just let that slide shall we? If living with that guilt wasn't enough she returns alive but not quite well. Turns out she's a carrier of the virus but not affected by it, so now we have a potential cure as well. But before anyone can whistle Dixie; Don pays a visit to his wife, gets infected and paints the town red. The great thing is even though Don is one of the infected he remains a character in the film stalking after his children (silly or not it worked out well enough) who may or may not have the same natural resistance to the virus as their mother.
The movie not only becomes about surviving the outbreak, it becomes an even harder test to survive the military who've been ordered to "Wipe them out...all of them". You see THIS is what Alien VS Predator should have been like. People caught in the worst position possible while two bigger treats duke it out. They really ran with this ball in 28 Weeks, the survivors: Don's kids Tammy (Imogen Poots) and Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton), with Miltary Doc Scarlet (Rose Byrne), Sharp Shooter Doyle (Jermy Renner) Helicopter Pilot Flynn (Harold Perrineau) and a few "red shirts" as cannon fodder run a crazy gauntlet of zombies and bullets trying to make their way to safety. The movie might have a slow start but once it gets up to speed it really doesn't slow down until the end credits..much like the woman behind me who felt the need to give everyone within ear shot a free running commentary (see "Shooter" review for my first encounter with this person) I would have been pissed but based on her insight she clearly wears a helmet in the shower and isn't trusted with sharp objects so she has my pity and my mocking laughter.
Free commentary aside the only complaints I have is the over use of shaky and the sudden ear bleeding sound during attacks (it can be a bit much). Other than those small gripes this is a kick ass sequel that really plays well off its predecessor.
