Not So Mini-Review: JJ Abrams is one of those persona's in Hollyweird that always seem to have a grin and a trick up their sleeve. His Mission Impossible rocked, Lost is still awesome, and how many directors have the balls to make a new Star Trek movie with the original crew and toss most of the conventional trek lore to the wind, and better still to do it so well as to not piss off the Trekkers? Not many could have pulled it off let alone made it successful at the box office.

While I'm not the biggest fan of Star Trek you'll find, hell I'm probably not even in the top 10 in my zip code (live in a small town by the way) I do enjoy the shows and films, I love Shatner, and have been really enjoying those Enhanced Original Star Trek sets on Blu-Ray. That said I walked into JJ's new Trek expecting to enjoy it but not really expecting to be blow away. But that's exactly what happened, and for me to get caught off guard by a film is an amazing thing.

What's great about this is very simple; if you love Trek you'll enjoy this (some of you nitpickers might be at odds with this statement, but lets face it you nitpickers are miserable people anyway), if you just enjoy good sci fi and or adventure you'll enjoy this, even some of you rom-com people can find some things to love about this. You don't need to have any knowledge of Star Trek whatsoever to jump on board and have fun. The action is great, the story is cool, and that's all you need baby.

Buckle up and enjoy.

Rating: Not Rated
Number Of Discs: 1
Director: N/A

Synopsis: The Star Trek excitement continues with four of the most popular episodes of all time. Where No Man Has Gone Before
Warp speed goes wild when a Starfleet propulsion expert and his alien assistant come aboard the Enterprise to increase efficiency. The ship mysteriously rockets to an area previously unexplored by humans. Now in danger at the edge of the universe, the crew must uncover the link between space, time and travel if they hope to make it back alive.

Space Seed
Kirk discovers a ship carrying cryogenically frozen survivors of the 1990s Earth war known as the Eugenic Wars. When his life-support system dies, Khan, a warrior who ruled much of Earth, comes to life immediately, hatching a plan to rule mankind. Kirk and Khan now battle for control of the Enterprise and the entire human race.

A Piece Of The Action
Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down to a planet run like 1920s gangster America. Mob boss Okmyx threatens them with death if they don't surrender their phasers. Kirk engages the mobsters in a card game called "Fizzbin" to stall, while Spock and McCoy plot an escape to the Enterprise that will result in Kirk's rescue... or his death.

Journey To Babel
The U.S.S. Enterprise is transporting a delegation of diplomas, including Spock's parents, to a conference on Babel when Kirk is stabbed, Spock's father suffers a heart attack and the Enterprise itself is attacked by a warship. It will take deception, medical intervention and pure force to will to save the ship... and the mission.

Mini-Review: Enjoy the show but not a big enough fan to buy those awesome enhanced sets? Not to worry they've got you covered with these Star Trek Mix Tapes (aka Best of Volumes). Volume two gives us more of the same hand picked goodness to get your Trek on. This though we get Khaaaaaannn!!! And a trip to the Gangster planet (awesome!). It's a week for Star Trek and you've got three ways to boldly go.

Title - The Best Of Star Trek: The Next Generation - Volume 2
Rating: Not Rated
Number Of Discs: 1
Director: N/A
Cast: LeVar Burton , Michael Dorn , Jonathan Frakes , Gates McFadden , Marina Sirtis , Brent Spiner , Patrick Stewart , Wil Wheaton

Synopsis: The Best Of Star Trek The Next Generation continues on volume two. Four featured episodes selected from various seasons; Relics, The Inner Light, Cause and Effect, and Tapestry.

Special Features -
DVD-
Episodes -
Relics
The U.S.S. Enterprise crew is surprised to encounter the U.S.S. Jenolen, which crashed 75 years ago, on the surface of a tremendous gravitational force known as a Dyson Sphere. However, they are even more surprised to discover a survivor hidden in the ship's transporter: the legendary Captain Montgomery Scott has survived for three quarters of a century by keeping himself suspended in molecular limbo.

The Inner Light
An unsophisticated alien probe assumes a relative position, holding steady with the U.S.S. Enterprise, and releases a nucleonic particle stream that penetrates the ship's shields. Focusing solely on Picard, the beam knocks him unconscious. When he wakes up, Picard finds himself in unfamiliar surroundings, being cared for by an attractive woman. The woman, Eline, tells him his name is "Kamin," and he is her husband of three years. She also tells him that he has been sick and must be experiencing a memory loss. Picard soon learns that he lives on the planet Kataan, where he works as a simple iron weaver. His confusion is compounded when he notices that Eline wears an exact replica of the alien probe as jewelry.

Cause and Effect
The Enterprise-D is charting the Typhon Expanse, a previously unexplored region of space, until a distortion field suddenly fluctuates, the main propulsion systems collapse, and the Enterprise is thrown into red alert on a collision course with an older starship. Kelsey Grammer guest-stars.

Tapestry
Gravely injured in a Lenarian attack, Picard slips into a white, seamless limbo while Beverly struggles to save his life. There, he encounters Q, who informs Picard that he is dead, and this is the afterlife...and that Q himself is God! Picard refuses to believe that he is dead, let alone that Q is the supreme being. But Q is determined to prove otherwise. He produces the artificial heart that failed Picard and caused his death, which triggers Picard's sense of regret. With Q's urging, he admits that, given the opportunity to live life over, he would do things differently. Picard's wish is Q's command.

Mini-Review: I think Wayne Campbell said it best when he said: "Ah yes, it's a lot like "Star Trek: The Next Generation". In many ways it's superior but will never be as recognized as the original.".

Sure I like the original Trek but I didn't fall in love with the franchise until TNG hit the airwaves...ok when it hit syndication. The show had kept most of the space cowboy feel of it but added a ton of extra layers that just made for a wonderfully enjoyable show.

Now they are getting the best of treatment while we wait for TNG in High Def (there is a complete series on DVD available but trust me grab this and wait). If I had to pick some of my favorite episodes I'm pretty sure the selections of both Volume one & two would nearly mirror my own, you've got your borg (vol 1) and some of the best written tales and guest appearances. Nice when they pay attention to the fans right?

Make it so..

Mini-Review: On my list of "10 Movies you'd take with you on a deserted island" (I'd make a Blu-Ray player, TV, and power source from coconuts..See Gilligans Island is educational) Fight Club has made the list from jump. Not only that it's one of those movies made from books that actually improved the source material (which is saying quite a bit).

For every generation there is a movie that defines each gender and Fight Club is certainly that for guys around my age. It's biting and cynical and brutally honest about how many of have felt or feel. Life isn't always sunshine and lollipops and it's a frustrating factoid to process. It took someone like Chuck Palahniuk to put it into words and someone like David Fincher to show it to us.

If you haven't seen it already, now's your chance to see it in the best possible format. If you have it's time to upgrade. This is what quality writing and filmmaking look and sound like.

Welcome to Fight Club.

Title - Brüno
Rating: R

Special Features -

Blu-Ray-
Deleted, Alternate And Extended Scenes
An Interview with Lloyd Robinson
Enhanced VIDEO Commentary with Sacha Baron Cohen and Larry Charles
BD Live Features

Mini-Review: Think Borat was crazy? Then you haven't seen Bruno yet. While the set up is very similar to Borat (I.E: screw with people and show just what stupid comments can be pulled out of unsuspecting morons) Bruno is a whole other monster. Where Borat made people uncomfortable with his odd ways and ignorance of other cultures Bruno makes doesn't care if his naked sexuality freaks you out, to him everyone is playing on a lower level and should beg to catch up. Now where Borat had some moments you'd want to shield kids and people with delicate sensibilities Bruno has nothing but these moments it seems at times. Sacha is a mastermind of manipulation and disguise and there are times you'll wonder how he even got out of this movie alive.

If you love shock and awe, or raunchy and racy Bruno will work for you, if you hated Borat then avoid this one it wont change your opinion of Sacha or his character work.

Watching it at home does have one major downfall and that's the crowd reaction of seeing it in a theater, nothing quite divides an audience like one of these movies.

Title - My Sisters Keeper

Rating: PG-13
Number Of Discs: Standard DVD 1. Blu-Ray 2
Director: Nick Cassavetes
Cast: Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, Joan Cusack, Sofia Vassilieva, Alec Baldwin, Jason Patric

Synopsis: What keeps a family together? Nick Cassavetes, the director of The Notebook, again demonstrates his sure hand with tales of deep human emotion in this inspiring film about a loving family challenged - and united - by a child's illness. Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, Alec Baldwin and others in an exceptional cast bring sensitivity to the story of an 11-year-old girl, conceived to be a donor for her leukemia-stricken sister, and who finally demands the right to control her own body. This act of free will may tear the Fitzgeralds apart. Or, it may be the first step to a triumphant realization of devotion, dignity and what it means to be a family.

Special Features -
DVD-
- Over 15-Minutes of Powerful Additional Scenes.

Blu-Ray-
From Picolut To Screen
15 Minutes Of Powerful Additional Scenes
Includes Digital Copy Of My Sister's Keeper For Portable Media Players

Mini-Review: Get some tissues and get ready to leak profusely from your face. A very powerful film for me that makes it a very tough viewing but sometimes the tough ones are worth the effort. A great cast and wonderful filmmaking, yet I can't help wonder who would pop this on their IPod for on the go viewing..Am I wrong? That seems like an odd choice.

Another fine performance from Breslin that keeps her on that "ones to watch" list...at least until her and Fanning end up in a dueling death match for superior acting skills (it could happen).

If you like you films sad but powerful then this could be a fine choice for you this week, however if your tastes lean towards the Saw franchise then you might want to reconsider this at the video store (ya sicko).

Mini-Review: *whew* Now that is a ton of special features....my goodness I think I got the vapors just reading all that.

Quite possibly one of the most well known movies ever made, but how many of you have actually seen it? Exactly! Having seen it or not now is the time to discover it or be amazed at the restoration and massive special features.

Gone with the wind is one of those movies I do love and enjoy but for me it's not something that can be viewed all the time, once a year or every other works just fine for me and I'm thrilled to have a much better copy now available for these random viewing moments.

Get gone and be blown away.

Mini-Review: Say what you will but Scrubs is one of the funnier comedies around. There's a reason it's been on for eight seasons, two networks, and about a bazillion channels in syndication. Season eight was one of the stronger seasons despite being on the bubble and the network switcheroo.

While season nine may or may not be the end of the line (been said before), season eight certainly gave them plenty of jumping off points to get the ball rolling for a new season. Now you can go back and watch it all in High Def...Cougar Towns Courtney Cox in High Def. Heh heh.

Scrub up and jump in the waters fine.

Mini-Review: As of this writing my copy is on a UPS Truck (YAY!! But Dammit!!) so I can't comment on the actual DVD; however this is Always Sunny and it's a show that has never let me down for gnarly down right disgusting comedy so I can say without a doubt having these cats do a christmas special can only lead to something that will tickle my funny bone. If you've never seen this show I can't recommend it enough, mind you it's not for everyone but the people who wont like it aren't my kind of people.

That's all for this week kids...and remember YOU CAN'T UNREAD IT!
