Dreamworks has plans in the works for the upcoming Shrek sequel. An animated Shrek short film will be released just one week before Shrek 2 debuts at the theaters May 21. Here is the full story,

"Shrek 3-D," featuring the voice talents of original cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow, is slated to hit retail shelves May 11 in a move to generate additional disc sales of the original "Shrek" and to promote the new movie, DreamWorks executives said.

"With approximately 30 million more households across the United States and Canada making the switch from VHS to DVD since the November 2001 release of 'Shrek' on DVD, combining the original DVD in a two-pack with 'Shrek 3-D' gives fans an opportunity to get a DVD copy of the original animated feature along with 'Shrek 3-D,"' DreamWorks Home Entertainment domestic head Kelly Sooter said.

The original "Shrek" sold about 15.5 million VHS units and about 10 million DVD units to consumers for a total of 25.5 million combined domestic sales. Sooter said the animated feature has topped 40 million combined VHS and DVD units sold through to consumers worldwide, making it one of the top-selling home videos of all time.

In order to spark renewed interest in the "Shrek" DVD, the studio has crafted "Shrek 3-D," which includes a short animated story (in 3-D and 2-D), a sneak peek at the theatrical release of "Shrek 2," four pairs of 3-D glasses and the original "Shrek" feature film, for about $17.
