After numerous supporting roles in the 1990s, she starred in the film Cruel Intentions and the short-lived TV series Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane in 1999. She has since had notable roles in Hollywood feature films such as Legally Blonde (2001), The Sweetest Thing (2002), and Hellboy (2004).
Blair was born Selma Blair in Southfield, Michigan, the daughter of Molly Ann Cooke. She has three older sisters, Katherine (a book publicist), Elizabeth, and Marie. Blair had a Jewish upbringing and was given the Hebrew name Batsheva. As a child, Blair attended Hillel Day School in Farmington Hills and Cranbrook Kingswood school in Bloomfield Hills. She studied at the University of Michigan, where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1994. She also studied with Stella Adler.
